Recognizing Veterans In Her Community: South Windsor Star Student
We all know students who excel in academics, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one resident who is making an impact in South Windsor.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.
This submission comes from Daria Plummer, who nominated Mihika, a ninth-grader from South Windsor.
Star local student’s name: Mihika

How do you know the star local student? 3+ years
Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
Mihika is a young woman who has set personal goals to help others since she was in elementary school. Mihika believes that the youth of today, in order to appreciate the freedoms in our country today, need to recognize the service of veterans. In 2019 she approached both the mayor of our town and our Patriotic Commission with her idea of recognizing South Windsor veterans with banners hung on community area light poles. Since then she has researched banner design, manufacturers, cost, web design, public relations, and has worked diligently raising funds needed, through sponsorships, to bring this project to realization. To date, 50 veterans have been recognized for their service to our nation. Banners are flown from Memorial Day through Veterans Day and are given back to veterans at the conclusion of "their" year of honor.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?
It sounds very easy to state that Mihika is selfless. But it is true. She loves bringing joy, honor, recognition to others. And along the way, she has matured into a graceful, articulate, and forceful advocate for the impact that veterans have had on our way of life.
Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Mihika!
