Juneteenth Celebrations Scheduled This Month In Stamford
Juneteenth celebrations are scheduled to take place in Stamford this month.
STAMFORD, CT — With the calendar flipped to June, a couple of Juneteenth celebrations have been announced in Stamford.
The Stamford community is invited to join a citywide Juneteenth celebration that is scheduled for June 3 at 2 p.m.
The celebration, which is free to attend, will take place at the GenRe Auditorium at UConn-Stamford.

The afternoon is dedicated to the youth of Stamford who will provide performances, along with presentations of Stamford Public Schools Juneteenth banner winners and the 2023 Stamford ICON Award presentation to Apostle Herlene Streeter.
Additionally, all attendees will receive a Juneteenth gift.
On June 17, a celebration will be held in Mill River Park from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature activities for all ages.
Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021 and recently became a state holiday in Connecticut.
The day marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. Union Army General Gordon Granger delivered the news to those still enslaved in Galveston, Texas, that they were free.
