Man Charged With Animal Cruelty, Dogs Seized: Stratford Police

STRATFORD, CT — A man has been arrested on animal cruelty charges in connection with the living conditions of 10 dogs that were seized last week in Stratford, according to police.

Stratford Animal Control Officers responded to a home on Allencrest Drive for a complaint regarding the “welfare and living conditions” of dogs at the residence, according to Capt. Robert Burroughs.

“Animal Control Officers and Stratford Police Officers located the animals in enclosures in the rear yard,” Burroughs wrote in a news release. “They assessed the conditions of the animals and their living conditions. It was determined that the animals would be seized after their assessment was complete.”

Burroughs said eight pit bull mix puppies, and two pit bull mix adult dogs — one female and one male — were seized. The dogs were immediately taken to the vet for evaluation and treatment, according to Burroughs.

The dogs are being housed at the Stratford Animal Control facility, according to Burroughs.

The owner of the 10 dogs, 27-year-old Malik Powell, was arrested and charged with nine counts of animal cruelty, two counts of failure to rabies vaccinate, two counts of failure to license, and nine counts of confinement of dogs.

Powell was released on a promise to appear in court on Oct. 7.
