New Bandstand Takes Shape On Suffield Town Green

The community-funded project is replacing the 1976 bandstand on the Town Green, town records show.

SUFFIELD, CT — A new piece of Suffield’s Town Green is starting to take shape just in time for a busy summer season.

Suffield Rotary said The Barnyard has started assembling the town’s new bandstand on the green, marking visible progress on a community-funded reconstruction project.

“Built by Community for Community!” Suffield Rotary said in a post announcing the latest work. The group also thanked those who have donated and helped create what it called “this wonderful addition to our hometown.”

The project is replacing the existing bandstand, which town records say was originally installed in 1976. The new structure is being built in the same location on the middle green, according to minutes from the Suffield Historic District Commission.

The commission approved the project in a 5-0 vote in July 2025. According to the minutes, the proposal called for a larger bandstand with improved accessibility, increased capacity and less maintenance.

The new design includes architectural features meant to fit with historic Main Street, along with all-timber construction and a stamped concrete base, according to the minutes. The project was also described to the commission as an upgrade that would improve the bandstand’s functionality and usability.

Commissioner Kevin Mayne, who presented the application, told the commission the new design would offer “improved accessibility, increased capacity, and require less maintenance,” according to the minutes.

Town records show the project was already moving earlier this spring. First Selectman Colin Moll told the Board of Selectmen on April 1 that foundation work had begun on the new bandstand on the middle green, according to board minutes.

BuiltBySuffield.org, a project website for the bandstand effort, says the new structure is being built through community support and donations. The site says the bandstand has been approved by the Historic District Commission and was designed to support more concerts, family activities and townwide events.

The reconstruction comes as Suffield Parks & Recreation is also promoting the PeoplesBank Summer Concerts on the Green.

“Summer nights are better on the Green in Suffield,” Suffield Parks & Recreation said in a post announcing the concert schedule.

The concerts will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Suffield Town Green, according to a flyer shared by the department. Residents are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, and food trucks will be on site.

The schedule includes The 1220 Band on July 8, The Tom Ingram Band on July 15, ERAS – A Taylor Swift Tribute on July 22, Dr. C & The Cure Alls on July 29 and The Falcons on Aug. 5.

Suffield Rotary encouraged residents to stop by the Town Green and check out the bandstand progress.
