Two of the nation's best-known founding figures are the focus of a public program in Suffield this week.

SUFFIELD, CT — Two of the nation’s best-known founding figures are the focus of a public program in Suffield this week.

The Suffield Historical Society will meet Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Common Room at Second Baptist Church. The meeting is open to the public.

According to the society, the program will look at visits by John Adams in 1774 and George Washington in 1775. Organizers said Adams stopped in Suffield at the Austin Tavern with the Massachusetts delegation while returning from the First Continental Congress, and Washington later passed through town on his way to take command of the Continental Army in Cambridge.

American Studies students from Suffield Academy are scheduled to present the program. Organizers said the students will discuss the historical context of the visits, what each future president thought of Suffield, and their work with community partners tied to the town’s Suffield250 efforts and the broader commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Residents can attend in person or join by Zoom. The Zoom session is listed under the topic “Suffield250” and is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., ahead of the 7 p.m. meeting start.
