Tending the Story: The Fabric of Our Lives." 19th century New England frothed over with cloth, from the madness for merino sheep to King Cotton spinning & weaving through manufacturies like the satinett mill on Pattagansett Lake. Yet fabric from this era was carefully conserved, meticulously mended, and skillfully pieced, leaving us valuable lessons in sustainability & creativity. Costumed Educators from the Dirty Blue Shirts will explore the textiles available to the Avery household & their complex origin stories, discuss how stitches can become acts of craftivism & self-expression, and practice a variety of making & mending skills. This textile-themed living history event is set in the 1850s/1860s.
