The project began when the Wallingford Health Department successfully secured a competitive National Fitness Campaign grant. The Town then significantly leveraged opioid settlement funding to help bring the project to completion, recognizing the important role prevention, physical activity, and mental wellness play in building a healthier community.
Although the Health Department led the project from grant application through implementation, this project would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of many Town departments and leaders.
The Health Department extends its sincere appreciation to the Mayor's Office, the Wallingford Town Council, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Engineering, the Law Department, Youth and Social Services, Purchasing, Finance, Risk Management, and everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and support throughout the planning and construction process.
“Public health is about creating environments that make healthy choices easier,” Director of Health Vanessa Bautista said. “The Fitness Court is more than a place to exercise. It is an investment in prevention, mental wellness, and community health. We hope it encourages residents to get outdoors, stay active, and make wellness a part of their everyday lives.”
The Fitness Court features seven exercise stations that utilize body weight exercises to provide a full-body workout in as little as seven minutes, and is designed to accommodate users of all fitness levels. Residents can also download the free Fitness Court App for guided workouts, instructional videos, and personalized fitness programs to enhance their workout experience.
The Town invites residents to attend the Wallingford Health Department's Community Wellness Fair on Saturday, July 18, at Community Lake Park to celebrate the official opening of the Fitness Court, explore health and wellness resources, and enjoy a variety of activities for the entire family.
