Labor Day 2026 In West Hartford, What's Open? What's Closed

WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford residents should expect changes to trash and recycling schedules and several municipal closures because of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 7.

Trash, "B" week recycling, "B" week yard waste, bulk and metal collections will all be delayed by one day during the holiday week.

Monday's collection routes will be picked up Tuesday, Tuesday's routes will be collected Wednesday, and the one-day delay will continue through the remainder of the week.

Several town facilities will also be closed Sept. 7 for the national holiday, including:

• West Hartford Town Hall
• Libraries
• Community center
• Senior centers
• Public schools
• Yard Waste & Recycling Center

Holiday history

The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has since evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.

It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
