Mosquitoes In West Haven Test Positive For West Nile Virus: Health Department

WEST HAVEN, CT — The West Haven Health Department on Friday announced that routine mosquito testing on Thill Street has confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus.

Currently, this is the only location where the virus has been detected, the health department said.

In a letter to the community, Health Director Sheila Carmon noted the city is working with partners to address the issue and reduce mosquito activity in the area. Continued monitoring and control measures are underway, she said.

Residents can protect themselves by using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus; wearing long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk; removing standing water around their homes; and ensuring window and door screens are intact.

Most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms, Carmon said. Some may experience fever, headache, body aches, or fatigue.

Severe illness is rare but can occur, especially in older adults or those with weakened immune systems, Carmon said. Those who develop concerning symptoms should contact their health care provider.
