Threatening TikTok Trend Prompts Increased Police Presence At School In West Haven

WEST HAVEN, CT — There will be an increased police presence at Bailey Middle School in West Haven due to a threatening trend on social media that mentioned the school, according to officials.

Officials said a recent “Cat in the Hat” social media threat circulating on TikTok and other platforms mentioned Bailey Middle School in connection with the trend.

The “Cat in the Hat” trend involves videos and images depicting the Dr. Seuss character, inspired by the Mike Myers version in the 2003 movie, appearing to lurk outside homes, schools, and other locations, often at night, according to ABC News. The depictions appear to be generated by using artificial intelligence, ABC News reports.

“While these posts appear to be a hoax, the Board of Education, the West Haven Police Department, and City Officials are taking the matter seriously and actively investigating them,” West Haven Public Schools wrote in an announcement. “Therefore, precautions will be in place when school resumes on Monday, including an increased police presence at Bailey.

“We believe that all of our students and staff, given the amount of time and effort that has already gone into the investigation, will be safe. We also are encouraging anyone with knowledge of this hoax to come forward and contact the police immediately. Students should also feel free to speak with a staff member if they receive any information.”

Officials said that if any student is found to have been involved, they will be “severely disciplined.”
