Recent Death Notices From Westport: Caulfield, Dworkow, Pollak, Englebardt

WESTPORT, CT — Below are recent obituaries from Westport:

Katherine Christopher Caulfield, 84, died Aug. 17. A Westport resident for 46 years, she was a reading teacher for children with learning challenges in Westport schools and volunteered with the Discovery Museum, CT Challenge and the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program. She and her husband, Donald, were married 61 years and often traveled to Italy and Hilton Head Island. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and four grandchildren.

Jonathan Alan "JD" Dworkow, 70, died Aug. 2. A Westport native, he built a career touring internationally as a guitar tech and stage manager for the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol and Peter Frampton, among others; the detailed notebook he kept while working Prince's tour is now archived at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. In later years he turned to photography around Compo Beach and Calf Pasture Beach. He is survived by his mother, Estelle Dworkow, a sister, a niece and a nephew.

Anna Frances "Fran" Pollak, 87, died July 21. She moved to Westport as a young child and graduated from Staples High School in 1957. She worked at Perkin Elmer on the NASA space program under a top-secret clearance, later served as the Bridgeport Post's arts calendar editor for seven years, and then spent 37 years as a literary agent for Mews Books International. She is survived by three children, two granddaughters, a great-grandson and two sisters.

Rita Englebardt, 101, died July 20 at home. A Westport resident for 65 years, she wrote a column for The Minuteman and the Westport News under the pen name Rita Ross and worked for decades at the Remarkable Book Shop, Fillow Flowers, Daybreak Nursery and Max's Art Supplies. She and her husband, Stanley, moved to town in 1957 and built a Bayberry Lane home later featured in a Westport Historical Society exhibit on midcentury modern architecture. She is survived by two children and their families.

Barbara Jean "Jean" Schiavone, 95, died July 14. She and her husband, Paul, moved to Westport's Hockanum Woods neighborhood in 1966, where she raised five children and spent more than 60 years as a parishioner of St. Luke Parish. She was a fixture of Compo Beach's Thursday-evening Beach Bunch gatherings and cared for the altar linens at St. Luke's for years. She is survived by five children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Thomas Moore Lowrie, 97, died June 30 at home, three days before his 98th birthday. A Navy air navigator during the Korean War, he trained as an architect at Columbia University, worked for McKim Mead & White and Johnson/Burgee, and served as staff architect to the Museum of Modern Art during its 1980s expansion. He designed Camp Mahackeno's Beck Lodge and the Westport YMCA's health center, was a founding member of the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club, and skydived at ages 90 and 95. He is survived by two children and a granddaughter.

Loren Del Bene Cornette, 57, died June 22. She spent her career in product development and merchandising before focusing on raising her daughters, and found particular joy at the family's home in Vermont. She is survived by her husband, Paul, two daughters, her parents and two brothers.

Alvin (Al) Gregory Hageman III, 83, died June 13. A Westport resident since 1988, he spent 34 years as a senior executive with Citicorp before co-founding the investment firm Paramax Capital Partners, where he served as chief investment officer. He was a longtime board member and treasurer of the Friends of Sherwood Island State Park during construction of its Nature Center. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hope, three daughters and seven grandchildren.
