Westport Asks Residents, Businesses To Report Damage From Weekend Flooding

WESTPORT, CT — Westport officials are asking residents, property owners and businesses affected by Sunday's flooding to report damage through the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security’s CrisisTrack Damage Self Report.

As of Monday afternoon, Westport emergency responders had handled about 130 flood-related calls, rescued 13 people from vehicles and evacuated residents from several homes. The town is continuing to assess damage throughout the community.

"We recognize the disruption and damage this event has caused and sincerely thank Westport residents and businesses for their patience, cooperation and understanding,
First Selectman Kevin Christie said in a statement. "We are incredibly grateful to our first responders, Public Works crews, emergency dispatchers, utility workers, volunteers and everyone who worked tirelessly to protect our community and begin the recovery process."

Documenting the extent of the damage is a step in determining whether Fairfield County and Connecticut may qualify for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or other federal disaster programs, according to the town.

"Yesterday’s flooding significantly affected many areas of Westport," Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Nick Marsan said. "We are asking every resident, property owner and business that experienced damage to complete the survey. Accurate reporting is essential to understanding the full scope of the event and ensuring Westport’s impacts are properly documented."

The state is using the survey to document storm damage across Connecticut and help determine eligibility for potential post-disaster assistance programs. Completing the survey is not the same as filing a claim and does not guarantee assistance will be available.

Residents, property owners and businesses can report flood damage through the CrisisTrack survey at https://crisistrack.juvare.com/public/CTDEMHS/request.html.

Residents and businesses also should report property damage directly to their insurance companies, officials said.

"We appreciate our residents, first responders, Department of Public Works employees, telecommunicators, and everyone who worked throughout yesterday’s storm to help keep our community safe," officials said.
