Former Wilton Church Approved For 10-Unit Housing Development

WILTON, CT — A historic church property on Danbury Road could soon be transformed into housing after Wilton officials approved plans for a 10-unit residential development at the site.

The project at 254 Danbury Road would convert the former St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church property, later home to Wilton Baptist Church, into residential units while preserving the church building’s historic exterior.

According to project materials, the existing church structure would be converted into four units, while the current parking lot would be replaced with three new residential buildings containing two attached units each.

Plans call for homes ranging from three to five bedrooms and between roughly 1,900 and 3,600 square feet. The proposal also includes 20 parking spaces and a new sidewalk along Danbury Road.

The Wilton Planning and Zoning Commission approved a special permit tied to the project during an April 27 meeting, according to draft approval documents.

William Earls, a trustee of the Wilton Historical Society, is the architect for the project.

The church building dates back to 1864 and was originally designed for an Episcopal congregation by architect Henry Hudson Holly, according to historical records tied to the application.

A fire in 1971 damaged the sanctuary interior, though historical records describe the building’s exterior as remaining largely intact and well preserved.

The project comes as Wilton continues to see increased residential development activity along the Danbury Road corridor.
