Celebrate history at New Sweden Day – March 28, 2026, in Wilmington, DE

The New Sweden Alliance invites the public to New Sweden Day, a free, family-friendly festival, on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at Fort Christina Park. The event commemorates the founding of the New Sweden Colony in 1638—nearly 150 years before American independence—and its lasting influence on the Delaware Valley and the emerging nation.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy:

• Living history demonstrations
• Music and cultural displays—Swedish, Finnish, and Lenape
• Cannon firings
• Interactive educational activities
• Self-guided tour of Copeland Maritime Center

A ceremony and wreath laying at 1:30 p.m. will feature music by IVA and by RuthAnn Purchase and participation by the Swedish Ambassador, the Chief of the Lenape Tribe of Delaware, and other distinguished local, state, and international dignitaries.

The New Sweden Alliance is a coalition of local organizations dedicated to preserving and sharing this heritage. Member organizations include the Delaware Swedish Colonial Society, Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, New Sweden Centre, Old Swedes Foundation, The Swedish Colonial Society, Sister Cities of Wilmington, Inc., American Swedish Historical Museum, Historic Gloria Dei Preservation Corp., and the Finnish-American Society of the Delaware Valley.
