Students began preparing with selection of an animal or plant and organizing a detailed project plan that guides their work throughout the school year. The students must practice routines of daily animal care, including training, grooming, and showmanship techniques.
LRHS agriscience teacher Sophia Jaramillo-Vasconez said, “Preparation includes many months of project planning, animal or plant selection, record keeping, and skill development.”

Most of the preparation happens in the classroom where the students study science behind their projects. They learn what they need to do and provide for the animals or plants to thrive.

Jaramillo-Vasconez said, “In class, students receive instruction on animal science, plant science, nutrition, health, and ethics. They also complete required paperwork, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) records, and buyer letters while learning proper conduct and expectations for fair participation.”
Students face a time commitment that extends beyond just the school day or one class period. They commit to months of effort to be successful with their projects. The students also need to keep a routine for the best results.
“Livestock projects often require 3–11 months of consistent daily care and training, while plant projects may involve multiple growing cycles and long-term maintenance,” said Jaramillo-Vasconez.
