Man Shoots Self, Dies After Apartment Standoff With Deputies: Pasco Sheriff

WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — A man wanted on a Hillsborough County warrant died by suicide early Thursday after shooting at Pasco Sheriff’s Office deputies during a standoff at a Wesley Chapel apartment, PSO said in a news release.

Deputies responded to The Enclave apartments around 1 a.m. after receiving a report that someone had been shot and another person was barricaded inside an apartment with the suspected shooter, identified as 29-year-old Henry Josena, the sheriff’s office said.

The initial victim told deputies he was a bail bondsman who had tried to take Josena into custody and revoke his bond after he failed to appear in court on lewd and lascivious charges in Hillsborough County.

Deputies entered the apartment using a tactical shield to rescue another person inside.

After briefly making contact with that person, Josena fired multiple shots at deputies from another room, striking the shield, the sheriff’s office said.

Two deputies suffered minor shrapnel injuries. They didn’t return fire.

Deputies continued trying to communicate with Josena and deployed pepper balls, but received no response from him.

A drone was then used to enter the room, where deputies found Josena dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said.

The second victim was safely evacuated and wasn’t injured.

The bail bondsman was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, while the injured deputies were treated at the scene.

Body camera footage will not be released because the incident occurred inside a private residence, according to the agency, citing Florida law.
