Downtown St. Pete Restaurant Reopening 2.5 Years After Closure

A downtown St. Petersburg restaurant abruptly closed its doors in July 2023. Now, it's making a comeback, reports said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A downtown St. Petersburg restaurant that shut its doors two years ago has plans to return, reports said.

Acropolis Greek Taverna is making a comeback at 475 Central Ave., just a few doors down from its previous location, which closed in July 2023.

The Greek restaurant, part of a regional chain, abruptly shut down its restaurant at 515 Central Ave. after 12 years at that location “due to unforeseen circumstances,” according to its social media page.

At the time, the owners teased a potential new location.

“We don't say goodbye, we say see you later! Hopefully very soon,” they wrote. “We will keep you updated about our new location, remodeling and any news! Thank you for being with us for so many years.”

Social media posts show signage outside the space, which was most recently home to Concrete Jungle and Iberian Rooster before that.

Since closing its doors in St. Pete over a reported dispute with landlords, owners of the Acropolis have been working on its return to the city.

“This is my backyard. All my people are here, all my friends,” co-founder Sam Waez told St. Pete Rising. “I like being here.”

In addition to the restaurant, the 6,000-square-foot venue will also operate an underground lounge in the basement space, reports said.

Acropolis is expected to celebrate its grand opening in mid-December.

Other Acropolis locations include Riverview, New Tampa, Orlando, Ybor City, Tarpon Springs and South Tampa.
