Merriam-Webster 'Glow-Up' Comes As 1,400 New Words Added To Dictionary

Word enthusiasts may be pleased to know that Merriam-Webster.com has added 1,400 new words to its online dictionary just in time for cuffing season.

It's no "Mandela Effect" that these words have been widely used over time, according to Merriam-Webster.

"The new entries reflect words and meanings that have demonstrated widespread use over time, offering a window into the world today," Merriam-Webster stated.

The online dictionary has a data-driven process for adding new words to its publication. These words must be utilized by the masses of English language and could include specialized vocabulary. (See the full process here.)

Few of the newly-added words were released Tuesday; and as you can imagine, they have given Merriam-Webster a "glow-up."

The entries encompass the culinary world, social media culture, technology and emotion. There are some standouts, such as trash panda, which describes a raccoon.

Sunday scaries, vibe coding, shishito and whack-a-mole are among some of the new words.

Promposal, which is defined as an extravagant way to ask someone to be your prom date, even made the cut.

Here are other newly-added words:

Looksmaxxing: the practice of taking one or more sometimes extreme or dangerous measures intended to increase one's physical attractiveness

Rickroll: to trick someone into hearing the song, "Never Gonna Give You Up," by English singer Rick Astley

Crashout: a mental or emotional breakdown; a dramatic ending or failure; an emotional outburst or tantrum; a vehicular crash; a disqualifying loss or defeat

Cake pop: a lollipop made usually of a compressed ball of cake crumbs and icing that is dipped in a usually chocolate or sugary coating and often decorated (as with sprinkles or piped icing)

Meme coin: an altcoin that is created typically as a humorous tribute to something (such as an Internet meme) or someone (such as a celebrity) and that typically has no real utility

Parasocial: relating to or involving a one-sided emotional connection with someone (especially a celebrity or fictional character) whom one does not know personally

Bao: a soft bread bun that is stuffed with a sweet or savory filling (such as fruit or meat) and is cooked by steaming or sometimes baking

Yacht rock: a style of soft rock music originating in the 1970s and 1980s
