GA Officer Fatally Shot; Suspect At Large

WARM SPRINGS, GA — State authorities are searching for the man accused of fatally shooting a Georgia police officer late Tuesday night in Warm Springs.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has issued a Blue Alert for Jimmie Steverson, 23. Authorities say they are searching for Steverson in connection with the death of Warm Springs Police Sgt. Chris Fisher.

The GBI did not say how Fisher died, but said the deadly incident happened around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday in Warm Springs.

Fisher was killed in a drive-by shooting that may have been a targeted attack, WXIA-TV's Cody Alcorn reported, citing a be-on-the-lookout alert.

The fatal shooting occurred outside a motel, WSB-TV reported, citing the GBI.

Fisher reportedly arrested Steverson on Thursday, and Steverson was booked on drug and weapon charges. Alcorn reported Steverson also faced a charge of obstruction of a law enforcement officer through threats or violence.

Steverson was reportedly released from jail on a combined $10,000 bond Friday.

Authorities say Steverson is considered armed and dangerous. He is 5-feet-6-inches tall and 150 pounds, has black locs in his hair and brown eyes, the GBI said.

He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and black gym shorts Tuesday night in Warm Springs, the GBI said. He was traveling in a 2026 black Chevrolet Silverado, the GBI said.

"If you see him or see any suspicious activity, please take immediate precautions and notify 911," the GBI said.

Fisher joined Warm Springs Police on May 18 and became a sergeant on July 7, Alcorn reported.

"Marty, the girls and I are deeply saddened this morning by the news that Officer Chris Fisher has been killed," Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Wednesday. "This is a tragic reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis in service to their communities, and I ask that all Georgians lift up Fisher’s family and his fellow officers in prayer."

Warm Springs is located in Meriwether County, about 60 miles southwest of Atlanta.
