2 Delta Planes Avert Possible Close Call At ATL Airport: Report

ATLANTA, GA — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a close call between two Delta Air Lines planes Monday at the Atlanta airport, CNN reported.

The incident happened in the evening as Delta flight 1568 attempted to land at the same time as Delta flight 2472 was taking off at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Flight 1568 was reportedly arriving from Pittsburgh before briefly being diverted to Chattanooga due to weather.

“Somebody on the runway,” the pilot asked the tower, according to a recording of air traffic control audio from ATC.net obtained by CNN.

“He’s exiting now,” the tower reportedly responded.

The pilot for 1568 was heard on the radio saying he was going around and making a second attempt at landing, but air traffic controllers told pilots for both aircrafts to make right turns and reach 4,000 feet, CNN reported.

After anti-collision alarms went off, the news outlet reported a controller was able to guide the planes from one another.

“During the go-around, the flight crew maneuvered in accordance with established procedures while maintaining safe operations,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement retrieved by CNN. “Our crews train extensively to handle uncommon scenarios like this.”
