5 Killed In Labor Day Crashes; GA DUIs Surpass 300

Authorities say at least five people were killed in crashes during the Labor Day travel period in Georgia.

Of those five, the Georgia Department of Public Safety responded to crashes that killed four people. Another law-enforcement agency responded to the fifth deadly crash, according to DPS.

Those who died have not been identified, and crash details were not readily available.

The holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Ahead of Labor Day, DPS Commissioner Col. William W. Hitchens urged drivers to practice safety and precautions while on the road. He asked people to avoid being distracted while driving and to designate a sober driver if they planned to drink alcohol.

Even so, troopers charged 364 people with driving under the influence, according to the DPS' latest report Tuesday.

More than 800 people were cited for distracted driving, and 1,183 people received seatbelt citations.

Troopers also responded to 352 crashes that injured 139 people, according to DPS data.

Twenty-four of those crashes involved someone driving under the influence, and 22 of them involved a commercial motor vehicle, DPS said.

To compare, troopers responded to 359 crashes during the 2025 Labor Day travel period. GSP and other local law-enforcement agencies reported 15 deaths statewide.
