Boy, 6, Out Of Coma After Atlanta Crash: Report

ATLANTA, GA — A 6-year-old boy who suffered a brain injury in an Atlanta crash is awake from a coma and is recovering in a hospital, WAGA-TV reported Sunday.

Tupac Staples, a second-grader, had been in a coma at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital since being hit by a car on May 1.

The crash reportedly occurred near James Jackson Parkway Northwest and Browntown Road, the news outlet reported.

He reportedly suffered a broken neck, a punctured lung, internal bleeding and brain damage in the crash. The family told WAGA-TV he is not yet able to talk.

"I'm praying that he at least comes back half, 80% back, 70%, praying and hoping, put it in God's hands," father Stephen Olds told reporters. "He hasn't been able to talk, the only thing he can do is open his eyes. We will try this year to get him ready for the upcoming year because he's still hurting. ... Everybody miss him, all his friends from school."

A GoFundMe has been established for Staples. In a June 27 update, Olds wrote that his son was "doing much better" after surgery.

As of Monday morning, the fundraiser collected more than $3,000 of its $4,000 goal.
