Salmonella Recall Hits Jewel-Osco As Company Warns Customers Not To Eat These Products

Jewel-Osco has voluntarily recalled two salsas in connection with an expansive salmonella outbreak that has sickened people in over two dozen states, including at least 30 who fell ill in Illinois.

On Sunday, the FDA also announced a wider recall of products containing jalapeños sold in Illinois and elsewhere by other stores, including Whole Foods and Walmart.

At Jewel-Osco, the recalled salsas are Chefs Kitchen Fresh Salsa and Ready Meals Fresh Salsa, both of which were sold in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, and have sell-through dates ranging from July 31 to Aug. 10, according to the company.

Consumers who bought the salsas should not eat them but should instead dispose of them or return them to Jewel-Osco for a full refund.

A Wider Outbreak

The salsas contain jalapeños that were recalled by Taylor Farms distributor Direct Roots due to a supply chain association with an ongoing recall involving Coast Citrus Distributors and a common grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, authorities said. The grower supplied to Coast Citrus and was identified as the outbreak’s likely source. Coast Citrus agreed to recall remaining implicated product and is no longer importing from the grower, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The jalapeños, which have been linked to the cross-country Salmonella Javiana outbreak, went to distributors, restaurants and food service companies across the U.S., with 345 people from 27 states infected with the outbreak strain as of Wednesday, according to federal authorities. At that time, there had been 36 hospitalizations but no deaths, with illness onset dates ranging from June 19, 2026, to July 20, 2026.

Of 191 people interviewed, 177 reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba, authorities said Wednesday, adding both Chipotle and Qdoba received product from Coast Citrus out of Sinaloa. Chipotle has since switched its jalapeño supplier for impacted stores and Qdoba stopped serving jalapeños.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In addition to the warning from Jewel, the FDA issued an alert Sunday that Taylor Fresh Foods is recalling finished products containing jalapeños as well.
