Algonquin Garden Club’s ‘Mini Forest’ Earns National Recognition

The Algonquin Garden Club’s “mini-forest” project in Kane County has received national recognition for its innovative approach to restoring native habitats.

The project transformed a small area at the Dixie Briggs Fromm Conservation Area in Dundee Township into a densely planted forest using the Miyawaki method, which encourages rapid growth of native species, Shaw Local is reporting.

More than 200 native trees, shrubs and plants were planted by volunteers as part of the effort, which aims to support biodiversity and create a self-sustaining ecosystem. The garden club said the project has inspired interest in expanding mini-forests throughout the region, according to Shaw Local.

The Algonquin Garden Club, founded in 1929, focuses on community beautification, environmental preservation and education.
