Lake in the Hills Treehouse Sparks Debate Over Village Rules

A neighbor's complaint led officials to review whether treehouses are permitted under local zoning regulations.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — A Lake in the Hills teen's backyard treehouse has sparked a debate over whether such structures are allowed in the village after a neighbor complained to officials.

Village staff said treehouses are not permitted because they are not listed as an allowed accessory structure under local zoning regulations, though officials acknowledged there is no ordinance that specifically bans them, Shaw Local is reporting.

Max Santerelli, 13, built the treehouse without his parents knowing while his father was away on a business trip. The treehouse has since been taken down, according to the article.
