Biela Senior Center And Crestwood Rec Center Open As Cooling Centers

ALSIP-CRESTWOOD, IL—Intense heat and humidity are expected to linger Wednesday, as the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m.

The weather service said hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, with heat index values of 100 to 110 expected.

The Crestwood Recreational Center and the Biela Senior Center will both be available as cooling centers during regular business hours. After hours or if transportation is needed for a resident in need of a cooling center, please call 9-1-1 or come to the police department and use the outside call box for assistance.

The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night, will lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

If your power goes out, your air conditioner breaks, you don’t have air, or you just want to give your electric bill a break, here are cooling centers where you can escape the heat in Alsip and Crestwood.

• Alsip Village Hall, 4500 W. 123rd St. Alsip, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Air-conditioned seating in the Village Boardroom and clean drinking water. Non-emergency police: 708-385-6131; Village Hall main line: 708-385-6902.

The Cook County Department of Homeland Security also has a list of cooling centers for suburban Cook County and the City of Chicago, which may open on a 24/7 basis if needed.

Residents are advised to call ahead to make sure the cooling center is open.
