AURORA, IL — Prisco's Family Market is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and the city will honor the family-owned establishment with a special event Friday.

Prisco’s was established in 1926 when Italian immigrants, Tony and Mary Prisco, opened the store on Aurora's Southwest Side. At the time, the family lived upstairs, while the store operated downstairs in what would have been the building's parlor, dining room and kitchen.

Tony went on to launch his well-known "Store on Wheels" in conjunction with the brick-and-mortar store, before moving the business to the corner of Lake Street and Jericho Road. In 1992, Prisco's moved into its current location, 1108 Prairie St.

Nowadays, the fourth generation of Prisco family members own and operate the store, selling meats, homemade deli dishes, fresh produce and wine.

To commemorate its centennial, the city and grocery store will host a ceremony at noon Friday. Mayor John Laesch, State Rep. Barbara Hernandez (D-Aurora), 4th Ward Alderman Jonathan Núñez and Prisco's owner Andy Gazauskas will join. Specialty vendors and free hot dogs are slated for the event.
