Aurora Police To Participate In Prescription Drug Take-Back Day: What To Know

AURORA, IL — Locals will have a safe, convenient and anonymous way to dispose of unused or unwanted prescriptions this fall.

The Aurora Police Department will take part in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's biannual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Oct. 24. The event is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at police headquarters, 1200 E. Indian Trail.

Launched in 2010, the initiative focuses on removing potentially dangerous controlled substances from medicine cabinets. It also helps prevent medications from being flushed down the toilet and ending up in the local drinking water supply.

Controlled, non-controlled and over-the-counter substances will be accepted. Small, pint-size bottles of cough syrups may be accepted if they are sealed in their original container. People can also dispose of vapes, as long as batteries are removed.

Pharmacies, hospitals and physicians are not permitted to drop off excess medication. Marijuana, heroin, other illegal substances, needles and unsealed liquids will not be accepted.

"This event is completely anonymous — no ID is required, and nothing will be asked," Aurora police said. "It's a great way to safely dispose of medications and help protect the community.
