Barrington Grad Detained After Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla Intercepted At Sea

A former Barrington High School student is among other activists taken into custody following an attempted humanitarian sailing mission.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A former Barrington High School student has been detained after joining a flotilla that attempted to sail toward Gaza as part of a coordinated civilian aid mission, according to a Daily Herald report.

Carleigh Wamberg, formerly of Barrington and now living in Guatemala, sailed as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which departed on April 26 from Augusta, Italy, according to the Daily Herald. The group’s voyage was intercepted by Israeliforces before reaching its destination, with participants later taken into custody and transferred to authorities in Greece, according to the news report.

The flotilla was organized as a humanitarian effort aimed at challenging the blockade on Gaza and delivering aid, according to organizers cited in the report. Wamberg, 37, is now reportedly seeking to rejoin a future sailing attempt as international attention continues around the mission.
