Skeletal Remains Found At Forest Preserve Likely 'Not From Recent Death,' Officials Say

The human skeletal remains were found in a wooded area at Baker's Lake Forest Preserve in Barrington, officials said.

COOK COUNTY, IL — An investigation is underway after human skeletal remains were discovered in a Cook County forest preserve last month.

Forest Preserves of Cook County police received a report around 2:25 p.m. Feb. 14 about the discovery of the remains in a wooded area at Baker’s Lake Forest Preserve in Barrington, according to Carl Vogel, director of communications for the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

As of Monday, the cause and manner of death are pending in the case, said Natalia Derevyanny, director of communications for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An identity has not yet been released.

Authorities do not believe the remains are from a recent death, Vogel said.

Forest Preserves police, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office were at the site Friday as part of the ongoing investigation, and the preserve was temporarily closed to the public, Vogel said.

Forest Preserves police are leading the investigation and say there is no indication of danger to the public related to the case, Vogel said.
