📰 Top 5 stories in Chicago:

1) Sheriff launches 'carjacking-deterrent stickers' to dissuade hijackers. Drivers in Cook County now have access to a new tool to help deter carjackers and recover stolen vehicles faster. The new vehicle sticker program warns potential carjackers that the Cook County Sheriff's Office can immediately track the car if it is reported stolen. To sign up for the program, car owners should fill out an online consent form and receive anti-carjacking stickers in the mail—one for the rear driver's side exterior and the other for the inside of the windshield on the lower corner of the driver's side.

2) Bronzeville joins growing list of Chicago neighborhoods hiring private security to stop violence. Bronzeville will soon begin a pilot program to add private security to the area by hiring Halo Security Group to collaborate with Ex Cons for Community and Social Change to monitor busy streets and residential areas. The teams will patrol 39th to 47th streets and Vincennes to Cottage Grove avenues. The pilot program launches in two weeks and will cost $100,000 — with Ald. Sophia King (4th) using a discretionary microgrant to cover it. Frustrated with crime, several other Chicago neighborhoods have also turned to private security and non-police patrols for help.

3) NHL unveils Blackhawks 'Reverse Retro' jersey for 2022-23 season. There is a lot of change afoot for the Blackhawks, and the team jersey is one of them. Adidas and the NHL unveiled “Reverse Retro” jerseys for all 32 teams yesterday, and the Blackhawks version features some major changes. Instead of having the traditional logo on the front of the jersey, it is now located on the shoulder, with the word “Chicago” spelled out across the front. It also features a “barber pole” design with red, black and white stripes of different sizes across it. The team has yet to release the dates they will wear the alternate jerseys.

4) Lightfoot, federal officials in talks over environmental racism probe. Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration is negotiating with President Joe Biden’s housing officials over potential city reforms after federal investigators accused Chicago of environmental racist zoning and land-use practices. Community activists filed a complaint in 2020 claiming the city of Chicago perpetuates environmental racism by pushing industrial polluters from wealthier, predominantly white North Side neighborhoods to low-income communities of color on the South Side. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has has yet to declare next steps in the almost two-year civil rights investigation, but the feds could force the city to make major—and permanent—changes to its planning processes or risk losing millions of dollars in federal aid.

5) Iconic Tavern on Rush closing earlier than expected. Tavern on Rush in Gold Coast will be closing for good next week, instead of Jan. 1, 2023 as initially planned. Owner Phil Stefani said they originally had a verbal agreement with the building's landlord "to extend our management contract beyond its Oct. 31 expiration date" to serve customers through Dec. 31. But "due to contractual matters beyond our control," Stefani said they would have to close the iconic restaurant at the end of the month—the last day of service being Oct. 26. Reservations made for November and December will be canceled.
