Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Launches Second Annual "Survival of the Fittest" Competition
Statewide event encourages fitness, resilience and camaraderie among law enforcement officers while expanding access to wellness resources
For Master Sergeant Matthew Renderman of the Illinois State Police, physical fitness is about far more than passing an annual test. It's about ensuring officers are physically prepared for the demands of the job, mentally resilient under pressure, and connected to one another through shared challenges.
That vision is the driving force behind Survival of the Fittest (SOF), a law enforcement fitness competition Renderman spent several years developing before launching its inaugural event last October. Now entering its second year, the competition is expanding from a regional event to one open to Illinois State Police personnel.
Scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Ranta Howe Fit (9637 SW Highway, Unit 2, Oak Lawn, IL 60453), Survival of the Fittest combines functional fitness challenges in a fast-paced circuit format designed to test strength, endurance and resilience while fostering teamwork and camaraderie.

"Fitness is one of the most overlooked aspects of first responder wellness," said Renderman. "We spend a great deal of time talking about mental health, peer support and resilience, all of which are critically important. But physical health is equally essential."
Renderman serves on the Illinois State Police Peer Support Team and has become a respected advocate for officer wellness throughout the department. Earlier this year, the 100 Club of Illinois recognized his leadership by presenting him with its 2026 Individual Wellness Award at the Frontline Convention. The award honored his commitment to expanding wellness resources and creating innovative programs, including Survival of the Fittest, that encourage officers to invest in their long-term physical and mental well-being.

The approximately one-hour competition features divisions for both men and women, with awards recognizing the fastest overall male and female competitors. More importantly, organizers emphasize that officers of all fitness levels are encouraged to participate.
"Whether you're preparing for your physical fitness test, getting back into a workout routine or simply looking for a new challenge, SOF is designed to meet you where you are," Renderman said. "The goal isn't just competition. It's creating healthier officers and stronger teams."
To further support participants beyond competition day, Survival of the Fittesthas partnered with Yoga for First Responders, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to improving performance, recovery and resilience among public safety professionals.Every registered participant will receive complimentary lifetime access to the organization's online wellness platform, including its mobile app, weekly live virtual yoga classes and educational coaching sessions focused on injury prevention, mobility and recovery.
In addition, participants have access to the newly launched SOF Training System, a comprehensive fitness program created specifically for law enforcement personnel. The training system includes guidance on strength development, conditioning, mobility, recovery and overall wellness to help officers prepare for both the competition and the physical demands of policing.
While medals will be awarded to the top finishers, Renderman believes the event's greatest success will be measured by something less tangible.
"When officers train together, encourage one another and push each other to improve, those relationships carry back into the field," he said. "That's what Survival of the Fittest is really about."
