Chicago Heights Alumni Chapter Kicks Off a Weekend of Community Engagement and Scholarship

The Chicago Heights (IL) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. demonstrated its ongoing commitment to service, education, and community development during an inspiring weekend of outreach and investment in the next generation.

The weekend began on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, as the chapter participated in the Greeks in the Garden, hosted by the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Chicago. The event brought together members of the Divine Nine to promote food sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community wellness.

Representing the chapter was Brother Tony Redfield, Chairman of the Chicago Heights (IL) Alumni Chapter’s Kappa Community Garden. Redfield emphasized the lasting impact the garden will have on local families and youth.

“The garden’s impact on the community will help feed families and teach young people about growing their own food.”

The community garden serves as more than a place to grow fresh produce—it is a living classroom where young people can learn responsibility, healthy living, and the importance of giving back to their communities.

The chapter’s momentum continued on Thursday, June 25, 2026, as the Chicago Heights Alumni Foundation, in conjunction with the Chicago Heights (IL) Alumni Chapter, hosted the 13th Annual George C. Cherry Scholarship Golf Outing at the beautiful Odyssey Golf Course.

The annual outing brought together supporters, community leaders, sponsors, and volunteers to celebrate education while raising funds to support future scholars. During the event, the Foundation awarded 10 scholarships to outstanding young men who will be attending four-year colleges and universities this fall. Each recipient demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, character, and a commitment to achieving at the highest level.

Golf Committee Chairman Brother Charles Beard expressed his appreciation for everyone who made the event possible.

“We need to continue to strive to keep sending our young men to college who deserve a chance to succeed based on their outstanding work. Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s scholarship golf outing. Your continued commitment is making a lasting difference in the lives of these young men.”

Scholarship Chairman Brother Roosevelt Martin praised this year’s recipients and the supporters who help make the scholarships possible.

“Our children work hard, and those young men were chosen from a very competitive field of candidates. They are truly the best of the best. We also thank everyone who continues to support our scholarship efforts. Your generosity is the key to opening opportunities and helping these young men achieve their dreams.”
