'Major Flooding' Along Fox River Expected Wednesday, Thursday: NWS

Fox River already in moderate flood stage with additional rise forecast through Wednesday night into Thursday

The National Weather Service in Chicago has extended a flood warning for the Fox River, including the Algonquin Lock & Dam tailwater, as water levels continue to rise.

Moderate flooding is already occurring along the river from Johnsburg downstream to St. Charles, affecting parts of Algonquin, East Dundee, Carpentersville and Elgin.

As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, the river stage at the Algonquin Lock & Dam measured 11.8 feet, well above the 9.5-foot flood stage. Forecasters say the river will continue rising slowly through the week and could reach major flood stage between Wednesday night and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Several areas along the river could be threatened if water levels continue to climb, including:

  • River Street, Johnson Street and Maiden Lane in East Dundee
  • North Harrison Street near Riverside Park in Algonquin
  • Washington Street in Carpentersville
  • Water Street, Edwards Avenue and Elgin Avenue in East Dundee
  • Bayview Road and low-lying portions of Festival Park in Elgin

The weather service said the forecast is based largely on rain that has already fallen, with little additional precipitation expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. However, any new rainfall could change river forecasts, according to the National Weather Service.
