Teen Dies After Being Rescued From Lake Michigan

The teen was swimming in a channel with friends in Waukegan when the incident occurred Sunday, authorities said.

WAUKEGAN, IL — A teen, who was hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from Lake Michigan in Waukegan on Sunday, had died, according to reports.

Emergency crews responded to Waukegan Harbor and Waukegan Municipal Beach after receiving a call for a water rescue, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner. Friends of the teen were swimming with the teen in a channel when he did not come back out of the water.

Officials said emergency crews found and rescued the 17-year-old boy who was taken to Vista East Medical Center where he later died, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

Following the drowning, fire officials are urging swimmers not to go into areas that are not specifically designated for swimming, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
