DARIEN, IL – Darien is on a "good path" to solve the stormwater dispute between the owners of a new apartment building and nearby homeowners, an official said this week.

At a City Council meeting last month, the homeowners complained about stormwater runoff from the Jade Residences at Waterfall Glen apartment complex.

A year ago, the four-story building opened at 2305 Sokol Court in southwest Darien. When a split City Council approved the zoning in 2021, many neighbors expressed their opposition.

At Monday's council meeting, Dan Gombac, the city's municipal services director, said the landscaping contains deficiencies. He said officials have walked through the property with the old and new owners.

"Fortunately, we've gone in a better direction now, where we've had the opportunity to meet with the players to mitigate things," Gombac said. "So I picture a good path here within the next couple of days."

Alderwoman Mary Sullivan, who represents the area in question, said she appreciated the city's effort to resolve the problem.

"We got the chance to walk the property and address some of the landscaping concerns with the current owners and the previous owners," she said. "Thank you for looping me into that and giving me the opportunity to meet all the players."

South Barrington-based Jade Group broke ground on the project in summer 2022. Wheaton-based FCA Asset Management is listed on the apartment building's website.

At last month's council meeting, Susan Kleyweg, president of the Waterfall Glen Condominium Association, said muddy water from the apartment building is going onto the condo complex's property.

"It's been over a month since dredging (of ponds) was done. We were told there would be landscaping taking place," Kleyweg said. "We continue to have muddy water dumped onto our property. I just feel that you guys have forgotten us."
