Brass Knuckles Found In Traffic Stop, 2 Vehicle Burglaries: Des Plaines Blotter

DES PLAINES, IL — Brass knuckles allegedly found during a traffic stop, two vehicle burglaries and an intoxicated pedestrian accused of sitting in the roadway are among the latest cases reported by the Des Plaines Police Department.

The following information comes from Des Plaines Police Department reports. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE

A 43-year-old Itasca man reported that his Mitsubishi Outlander was burglarized between 10:50 and 11 a.m. Sept. 3 in the 2000 block of East Touhy Avenue.

Police said someone broke a rear window and stole a bag from the trunk containing approximately $1,000 in cash.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE

A man reported that his Toyota Sienna was burglarized between 3:45 and 4:40 p.m. Sept. 3 in the 2100 block of South Mannheim Road.

The victim told police he had left a black backpack on the passenger seat and that the vehicle's doors did not lock because of a malfunction. An unknown offender entered the vehicle and stole the backpack, which contained a laptop and passport, according to police.

WARRANT ARREST

Stephen Tomczyk, 35, of Chicago, was arrested at around 1:38 p.m. Sept. 3 in the 1200 block of East Touhy Avenue.

Police had responded to the area for a report of a battery that had occurred. While speaking with Tomczyk, officers learned he had an active warrant through the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, according to the report.

Police said the warrant was confirmed as valid and extraditable. Tomczyk was taken into custody and later transported to a Cook County courthouse for a detention hearing.

OBSTRUCTING A PEACE OFFICER

William Pylpyw, 39, of Elmwood Park, was arrested at around 2 a.m. Sept. 4 after police responded to a report of an intoxicated person in the 9500 block of West Devon Avenue.

Officers located Pylpyw near the Rivers Casino area and said he appeared intoxicated and initially refused to identify himself.

Police told Pylpyw to arrange for a taxi or rideshare and advised him he could not drive. According to the report, he refused to comply, walked away while shouting at officers and eventually sat in the roadway on Devon Avenue, causing a vehicle to stop to avoid hitting him.

Officers again asked Pylpyw for identification, but police said he refused and impeded their duties.

Pylpyw was charged with misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer and cited for pedestrian under the influence in the roadway. He was released with court information.

UNLAWFUL USE OF A WEAPON

Kerwin Urbanja-Brito, 34, of Chicago, was arrested at around 4:32 a.m. Sept. 4 following a traffic stop in the 2400 block of South Elmhurst Road.

Police said an officer saw a Chevrolet Sonic with expired registration and stopped the vehicle.

Urbanja-Brito was unable to provide a driver's license or proof of insurance, according to police. A records check showed he did not have a valid driver's license.

After Urbanja-Brito was asked to get out of the vehicle and taken into custody, police said an officer saw an object later identified as brass knuckles.

Urbanja-Brito was charged with misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon and cited for expired registration, no valid driver's license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was released with court information.
