'Abandoned' Gym Trashed During Break-In: Downers Grove Police

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Police say two masked men entered an "abandoned" gym in Downers Grove, damaging the property and throwing trash and other items into the pool.

Police were called to the former site of LA Fitness and XSport Fitness at 3200 Finley Rd. around 12 p.m. after the building's owner said they saw footage of people inside the gym.

An officer and a fire inspector entered the building via a door that had been propped open. They reported finding paint poured onto the area surrounding the gym's pool and also poured into the pool.

According to police, trash cans, a ladder, fire extinguishers and a back board had been thrown into the swimming pool.

The person who owns the building showed police a video they saw on social media that appeared to show two masked subjects filming themselves "urban exploring" inside the gym.

The video, entitled "Abandoned gym in Chicago," appears to show the subjects playing basketball, climbing a rock wall and placing a ladder in the pool.

Police say another video called "Who loves still water" appears to show the two suspects inside the gym and swimming in the pool. According to police, a third video shows the gym before it was damaged, and then depicts the subsequent damage.

When police responded to the incident, they say the building owner was working to get an estimate for the damage.

The Finley Road LA Fitness closed in July.
