Worker Trapped In Downers Grove Storm Sewer Pronounced Dead At Scene

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A worker who had remained trapped inside a storm sewer in Downers Grove since Monday afternoon was located and pronounced dead Tuesday.

Village officials say the man, whose name is being withheld for privacy reasons, was located around 5 p.m. inside the storm sewer near Washington Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another worker had been rescued Monday afternoon and was in good condition, according to an update from village officials.

Water conditions had caused the rescue efforts for the remaining worker to shift to recovery efforts.

The contractors became trapped in the storm sewer around 1 p.m. Monday.

The workers had been performing a large diameter pipe rehabilitation project helmed by Vortex Lining Systems.
