OAK BROOK, IL – No one will be charged in last month's shooting death of a man outside Oakbrook Center mall because the shooter was legitimately acting in self-defense, authorities said Tuesday.

Chance Jamerson, 29, of Chicago, was the only person arrested. She faces three felony counts of attempted armed robbery.

The victim was identified as Justin Hill, a 28-year-old Dolton man.

On Friday, a DuPage County judge ordered Jamerson to stay in jail until her trial.

According to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors, Oak Brook police were called shortly after noon Sept. 30 for a shooting in the parking lot outside Oakbrook Center mall.

Officers found Hill in the parking lot with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also said they found Jamerson injured by an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital.

Investigators alleged the driver of a black Mercedes arranged with Jamerson and two other people to go to the mall to buy four Swatch watches priced at about $448 each plus tax, with purchases limited to one per person.

Prosecutors said the driver brought $2,000 to buy the watches. Authorities said Hill later drove a white Nissan Rogue behind the Mercedes, blocked it in, approached the rear passenger side, opened the door, pointed a gun at the occupants and said, "Give me all that sh–."

According to the news release, the Mercedes driver got out and struggled with Hill for the gun. Prosecutors alleged Jamerson got out of the back seat and tried to help Hill during the struggle. The driver then wrestled the gun away and fired it, striking Hill and Jamerson, police said.

Investigators also alleged Jamerson sent Hill messages before the confrontation with details about the group's location, vehicle and plan. Authorities said one message shortly before the shooting said, "Smavk his ass with the pipe n tell me turn the car off.” Two more messages stated, "Block car in decent," and "Im help u get everything tho."

As the investigation determined Hill and Jamerson were committing armed robbery with a gun, the Mercedes driver is not being charged because Illinois law authorizes the use of deadly force to prevent a forcible felony, prosecutors said.

"It is alleged that Ms. Jamerson, working in coordination with Mr. Hill, arranged to rob at gunpoint an innocent man of approximately $2,000 and two other innocent individuals of their personal property," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
