Evanston Fire Captain Ends 20+ Year Career With City

EVANSTON, IL — After more than 20 years serving the City of Evanston, Fire Department Captain Jason Hays has announced his retirement.

Hays's first day at the Evanston Fire Department was Oct. 5, 2005. Throughout his time with the department, he was known for consistent professionalism, leadership and an unwavering commitment to public service.

“Captain Hays’ career reflects the very best of the Evanston Fire Department,” said Fire Chief Paul Polep. “His leadership, service, and commitment to the community have left a lasting impact, and we are grateful for his dedication.”

After being promoted to Fire Apparatus Operator in 2015, Hays spearheaded the development of the Mobile Integrated Healthcare program. The program rolled out in 2019 as the Evanston Community Health Outreach program, which established a partnership with St. Francis Hospital to provide community-based healthcare services.

In addition to his operational and leadership roles, Hays represented the department at ceremonial and memorial events and taught CPR to numerous community members.

"The Department extends its sincere gratitude to Captain Jason Hays for his years of service and congratulates him on a well-earned retirement," fire department officials said in a statement.
