Frankfort Fire District Reminds Residents Of Generator Safety Tips

FRANKFORT, IL — After some still remain without power from severe weather this week, the Frankfort Fire Protection District is reminding residents of generator safety tips.

The fire district said it has responded to several incidents over the past day involving generators and carbon monoxide.

If using a portable generator, the first district said to remember these basic safety guidelines:

• Keep generators OUTSIDE and at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows and vents.
• NEVER operate a generator inside a home, garage, or other enclosed space, even with the garage door open.
• Point generator exhaust away from your home. Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless, poisonous, and can be deadly.
• Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms.
• Plug appliances directly into the generator or use properly rated outdoor extension cords.
• Never refuel a hot or running generator. Turn it off and allow it to cool first.

According to the ComEd Outage Map, several hundred customers remain without power in the Frankfort area, as of 9 a.m. Thursday. 337 customers are without power in Frankfort, 217 are without in Frankfort Square, and 141 in Frankfort Township.
