Mosquito Spraying Planned In Geneva As Traps Test Positive For West Nile Virus

GENEVA, IL — Another citywide mosquito spraying is planned from dusk Friday to dawn Saturday in Geneva, city officials said.

The pest control application comes on the heels of more surveillance traps testing positive for the West Nile virus, according to a news release. The Kane County Health Department confirmed two human cases of the virus last week — both were Aurora residents.

"These cases are a reminder that West Nile virus is present in our community and that mosquito bite prevention remains important throughout the remainder of the mosquito season," Michael Isaacson said in a statement. "While most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, the virus can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults and people with weakened immune systems."

Geneva's contractor, Clarke, will be using a synthetic treatment that is safe for humans and pets. However, people with asthma and other respiratory conditions are advised to stay indoors with windows closed during the misting application and for one hour afterward.

Residents are encouraged to report mosquito nuisances and standing water issues directly to Clarke via the company's online portal.

West Nile virus is most commonly spread through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito, more commonly known as a house mosquito. They become infected when they feed on birds carrying the virus.

The spraying could be rescheduled due to inclement weather, officials said.
