Grayslake-Area Closures: Extreme Cold Prompts Schools To Move Online, Close Doors For Day

An extreme cold warning has been issued for the Chicago area for Friday morning.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Local schools are beginning to announce closures Friday as extreme cold is in the forecast for the Chicago area.

Here's the local schools that have announced closures so far:

  • District 46 students will switch to e-learning on Friday and all schools within the elementary school district will be closed.
  • District 127 will switch to an e-learning day as well due to the "extreme cold." All after-school athletics and activities are still scheduled for Friday.
  • Prairie Crossing Charter School will be closed Friday
  • Precious Lambs Preschool will be closed.
  • Lake County Tech Campus in Grayslake will be closed and will switch to e-learning for the day

On Thursday, an extreme cold warning was issued for the Chicago area for 3 a.m. to noon on Friday. Wind chills between -30 and -40 are expected for central, north central and northeast Illinois, according to the National Weather Service.

Under the extreme cold conditions, frostbite to exposed skin could occur in as little as 10 minutes, and anyone who must go outside should dress in layers, including a hat, face mask and gloves.
