Dangerous Currents Prompt Warning At Lake County Beaches

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Beachgoers looking to escape the heat were urged to exercise caution as forecasters say swimming could be dangerous.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement through Wednesday afternoon due to high wave action and dangerous rip currents in Lake Michigan.

"Swimming conditions will be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers," forecasters said.

Last week, Chicago police pulled a 70-year-old man from Lake Michigan near Montrose Harbor who had become completely submerged. The man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, there have been 35 Great Lakes drownings in 2026, with 17 of those being in Lake Michigan.

Forecasters said all swimmers and boaters should avoid being on the water until the hazard passes. Exercise caution when venturing out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls and other shoreline structures.
