Why I Belong to the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce

People sometimes forget that “nonprofit” is a tax classification, not a business model. At The Art Center Highland Park (TAC), we still have payroll, utilities, insurance, programming costs, and the responsibility to remain solvent so we can serve the community year after year. We are mission-driven, yes—but we are also a business. And like every business in Highland Park, we thrive when we are connected, supported, and part of a larger economic ecosystem. That’s why I belong to the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce.

Being part of the Chamber places TAC in the same room as the entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, service providers, and creative professionals who shape the daily life of our city. These are the people who understand what it takes to keep doors open, to innovate, to adapt, and to invest in Highland Park’s future. Their support of TAC—through sponsorships, partnerships, and simple word-of-mouth—helps us sustain the exhibitions, classes, and community programs that make this city vibrant.

But the relationship is reciprocal. TAC brings foot traffic to local businesses, collaborates on events, and contributes to the cultural identity that makes Highland Park a place where people want to live, work, and spend time. When we succeed, the city succeeds. When the city succeeds, we succeed.

My membership in the Chamber is also personal. It’s a statement that I’m not only leading an arts organization—I’m investing in Highland Park itself. I believe in this community, in its potential, and in the power of businesses and nonprofits working side by side to strengthen the fabric of our city.

Belonging to the Chamber isn’t just good for TAC. It’s good for Highland Park. And that’s why I’m proud to be a member.
