LTHS Board Approves Addition Of Girls Flag Football Team

LOCKPORT, IL — The Lockport Township High School Board of Education has approved adding girls flag football for the 2026-27 school year.

At its April 27 meeting, the Board approved the addition of the girls flag football team, which will have a varsity and junior varsity level.

Principal Jacqueline Johnson and Athletic Director Mike Dwyer presented on the new sport at the meeting.

Superintendent Robert McBride said before the approval that Lockport was the only school in their conference that didn't have a girls flag football team.

Johnson said LTHS would now have 10 sports in the fall, six for girls and four for boys, as well as sideline cheer and dance.

"It is the fastest growing sport in the state," Johnson said. The school surveyed students for interest in participation and interest was high.

The IHSA first sanctioned a girls flag football state championship in the 2024-25 school year. The sport started with 154 teams in the state, and grew to 224 this past season.

Lockport's season would have about 15-20 games this season, and the roster would be about 20 students for each team level.
