Morton Arboretum Plans 'Most Ambitious Installation Ever' For Illumination: Holiday Lights

LISLE, IL — The Morton Arboretum plans to unveil Illumination: Holiday Lights' "most ambitious installation ever" during the 2026 season, which opens in mid-November.

The installation's 400-foot canopy will mimic the colors and motion of the aurora borealis. According to Morton Arboretum, this season will be the only opportunity to see this Northern Lights-inspired installation.

Three other new installations will be featured this season, including lightup mushrooms, moving glowing orbs that conjure fireflies and a tunnel filled with lights that evoke rainfall.

Also new in 2026 is a Model Train Fantasy Woodland. The model train will chug along 1,000 feet of landscape, making its way through miniature scenes on the ground and overhead.

“You won’t want to miss this year’s Illumination,” Amy Scott, head of Morton Arboretum's exhibitions, said in a statement.

Scott added, “From a model train fantasyland and breathtaking new large-scale installations inspired by natural phenomena to enhanced returning favorites guests have loved for years, this season’s exhibition invites visitors to slow down, explore and experience the wonder of trees and nature in an exciting new way. Whether it’s a first visit or a longtime family tradition, guests will discover something surprising, captivating and unforgettable around every corner.”

The 2026-27 Illumination: Holiday Lights will run Nov. 14 through Jan. 2. Ticket sales open Oct. 15.
