Obituary: Mary Theresa Abbott
The matriarch of her family, Mary's faith was the cornerstone of her life, and her family was her pride and joy.

Mary Theresa Abbott (Dunne), age 82, of Shorewood, passed away peacefully, Friday, May 15, 2026, with her loving family by her side.
Born August 26, 1943, in Glinsk, County Galway, Ireland, she was the daughter of Peter and Ellen (Dowd) Dunne.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 58 years, William J. “Liam” Abbott; her children, Tara Abbott and Neil (Melissa) Abbott; her grandchildren, Ellen, Natalie and Gavin; her sisters, Kathleen Dunne and Julia Ann (John) Linzer; brother, Thomas Dunne; many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and extended family in Ireland and England.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, William (Provi) Dunne.

The true matriarch of her family, Mary had a gift for bringing people together. She organized countless cherished gatherings, from the beloved annual Christmas Eve celebrations in the basement at 7943, to many memorable family vacations at Sunny Brook Farm.
A devout Catholic, Mary's faith was the cornerstone of her life. Her deep and abiding relationship with God guided her every day, and her love for the Church was evident in all that she did.
Mary was a woman of many interests and passions. She loved playing bingo, bunco, bocce, and cards with her grandkids (Uno & Old Maid), enjoyed traveling and found great fulfillment in volunteering for those in need. But above all else, her favorite pastime was simply being with her family — the people who meant the world to her and brought her the greatest joy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church would be appreciated.
Funeral services for Mary Abbott will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2500 S. Arbeiter Road, Joliet, IL 60431. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip.
