'We Will Miss You:' Beidelman Furniture Announces Closure After 165 Years In Naperville

NAPERVILLE, IL — Since 1861, Beidelman Furniture has helped residents in Naperville and beyond shape the homes they lived in, first with cabinetry, then with custom chairs and sofas, carved wooden tables, handmade rugs and more. The oldest business in DuPage County, Beidelman Furniture announced Thursday that it will close after 165 years in Naperville.

Located at 239 S. Washington St., the family-owned furniture store's 1928 building was named a historic landmark by the Naperville City Council in 2024. Its Gothic Revival exterior cuts a recognizable figure in downtown Naperville, with its arched windows and nearly two-story tall illuminated sign with memorable green lettering.

Inside, you'll find the first elevator that existed in Naperville.

The announcement of the store's closure was simple and straightforward, but prompted dozens of comments from residents expressing their dismay.

Accompanied by a black-and-white photo of the Beidelman's exterior with the text 1861-2026, the announcement read, "We will miss YOU!! Last day of business will be April 29. Thank you for everything, Naperville!!!"

Facebook user Maribeth U. wrote, "I have such fond memories of walking the floors of your store while my mother shopped. The delightful elevator that I secretly feared would trap us. Thank you for the years beautifully outfitting our homes."

"Looked at furniture there in 1970...," Barb H. recalled.

Most of the comments expressed the same sentiment, "This is sad news."
